Wellness - What does it mean in today`s world

Released on: October 18, 2007, 1:20 pm

Press Release Author: Emmett J. Hughes, D.C., M.S.

Industry: Healthcare

Press Release Summary: Wellness is a term used by many in the mainstream and
alternative health care fields. In today's confusing maze of herbal remedies,
vitamin claims, diet fads and health gurus, it's sometimes difficult to know which
one is right for you. Rather than the absence of disease, wellness is achieving
optimal health, encompassing body, mind and spirit.

Press Release Body:
The concept of wellness in the 21st century is something that can have different
meanings for different people. Is it simply the absence of disease or injury, or
is it something more? I submit that wellness is something much more. Wellness
incorporates the whole being; body, mind and soul. Only when all three are
functioning optimally can someone achieve wellness.

As a society, and as individuals, we must examine our lifestyles and decide what we
are willing to "sacrifice" to be well. Are we able to make choices that will
contribute to our wellness, or will we continue on a path towards chronic disease
and illness? How is it that in an age where organic, healthy food has never been
more available, and during a time when exercise and outdoor recreation
opportunities are at an all time high, we continue to get sicker? Surely, we are
not chronically ill because we lack a certain pharmaceutical or have too many body
parts that need to be removed surgically.

The influence that huge, international corporations have on our psyche cannot be
ignored. The idea that a meal at a fast food restaurant comes with a toy that is
associated with the latest children's movie is a powerful, seductive, and insidious
problem. Are we ready to deprive our children of their right to be part of pop
culture?

We are all charged with protecting the next generation, whether it's from sexual
predators, drugs, or from an unhealthy lifestyle. There was a family that was
feeding their dog a diet of soda and potato chips. Animal welfare groups had the
dog removed. Most of us are horrified by this and can see how detrimental this is
to the animal, and yet we do the same to our children. Shouldn't we be even more
protective of our children?

The incidence of chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke,
and autoimmune diseases is at epidemic proportions. Our paradigm of what it means
to he healthy must change, or this trend will not only continue, but also
accelerate. People are sick of being sick. They don't buy into a system that
insists only medicine will save them. They are ready for a new message.

I believe that we are hungry for, and ready to make, the mature decision as a
society, to step up to the commitment to make ourselves healthier, and to pass this
legacy on to the next generation. We need not only consider the food that we eat,
but also the activities we engage in, and the way we choose to stimulate our minds
and souls. I believe that as chiropractors, nutritionists, homeopaths,
acupuncturists, massage therapists, psychologists, as well as other holistic health
care practitioners, we are uniquely qualified to bring the message of wellness to
our society at such a critical point in our history.

Great changes in societies throughout history have always begun with a few
courageous, thoughtful individuals. You have the power to change history, beginning
with your own health and the health of those you love. Cultivate a willingness to
look at the choices you are making and commit to some simple shifts that will pay
great dividends in your own history as it unfolds before you. Connect to
alternative health professionals. Realize that the word "alternative" in this
instance means addressing your health with other than drugs. Naturally good health
is available to you, and the results of pursuing it can be far more powerful than
using medications to try and undo what's going wrong!
